Western Serbia has a diverse landscape: the plains of Macva lie in the north, while the rest is covered with mountains and high plains. Its lower regions are famous for their orchards (try to drink a local sljivovica!). The powerful river Drina offers wonderful views and borders to the lovely national park Mt. Tara. Visitors are advised to see the areas medieval monasteries. Valjevo The biggest town of Western Serbia, interesting for its old centre of cobbled streets with numerous craftsmens workshops and old-fashioned houses built in the traditional Balcanic style that have preserved the spirit of the old days. Brankovina Village 10 km from Valjevo. This beautiful village still keeps the memory of Nenadovic family, Prince Aleksa, Prota Mateja, Cika Ljuba and other significant people of this family. Brankovina is also proud of the poet Desanka Maksimovi who attend school there and at the end of her life chose to be buried there. Ethno village on the Nenadovic property.
Trsic Village Trsic, birth place of Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic, reformer of the Serbian language and Serbian literature. Since 1933 Vuks home has been renovated and cultural manifestation «Vukov sabor», which cherishes both Vuks tradition as well as contemporary culture, was established. Banja Koviljaca The mineralized water here has been well known since the ancient times. However, even those in no need of a medical treatment are happy to come here. Beautiful park, the famous Kur-salon and closeness of Drina River make the stay in this place very pleasant. Taor Springs In the Donji Taor village on Mali Povlen is one of the most beautiful springs in the country spring of the Skrapez River. The water rises at length of several hundered meters making the beautiful slopes. Tara National Park One of the most beautiful mountains in Serbia and also one of the best preserved natural entities. It is the natural habitat of many other species protected by law. Krupanj Dobri Potok One kilometer away from Krupanj is Dobri Potok, place known for the old church dedicated to the Assumption of the Holy Virgin. Beside the old church, Museum of Natural History and Museum of Ethnography of this area are also included in the complex.
Takovo A place where Knez Milos started the Second Serbian Insurrection against the Turks in 1815. Ovcar-Kablar Gorge Ovcar Kablar gorge is formed by Ovcar and Kablar mountains and Zapadna Morava River with its meanders. It is under protection of the State as the 1st grade nature site. It is a place of almost extraordinary natural beauty but also of a great cultural and historical significance. Then monasteries which were the pillars of cultural and spiritual development of the Serbian people for centuries are located on the cliffs of these mountains. Potpecka Cave This unusual cave is located between Pozega and Uzice in Potpece village. It is interesting because of the high (50 m) entrance and a tourist path located on the upper arch. The length of the explored part is 500 meters and has two horizons. It is rich in cave decorations. Zlakusa Village next to Potpece is Zlakusa. It became famous because of the pottery which has been manufactured here for centuries. What makes the pottery produced here so special is adding of grind stone into the clay. This village is well known outside Serbia too. Every year the International Artistic Pottery Colony is held here. Uzice The city located between Zlatibor and Tara on the banks of river Djetinja. It is famous for its cheese, milk cream, Uzice smoked ham and, of course, Uzice people because of their temperament and humor.
Zlatibor One of the biggest tourist centers in Serbia. Zlatibor plateau, which lies 700-1500 meters above the sea level, intersected by many rivers and streams offers its visitors different contents. Winter sports, recreational activities or enjoying the delicious Zlatibor specialties... Sirogojno Open museum Staro selo represents the museum of folk architecture from 19th century. Apart from traditional style houses, museum also works on preservation of the traditional crafts by making he copies of the items displayed in the museum. This place also hosts many cultural events. Some of the houses in the complex are used for accommodation of the visitors, and one of them is a home to an old tavern. The Sargan 8 An old narrow-gauge train ascending the Tara mountain, has been restored to a first-class tourist attraction. Wooden City on Mecavik Mecavik hill located between Zlatibor and Tara is the place that famous director Emir Kusturica chose for his home. Houses in this town are original old village houses. Each of these houses has a purpose: gallery, library, cinema, shop, restaurant...
Zlatar Lake One of the three artificial lakes on Uvac River. It is more then 20 kilometers long. Zlatar Mountain of lakes and pastures with the highest top of 1700 meters. An exceptional tourist destination for those who love nature, peace and recreation. Mileseva Monastery The monastery is located only 5 kilometers from Prijepolje at the bank of Milesevska River. It was founded in the 13th century as an endowment of King Vladislav. It was renovated twice. Once in the 16th century and then in the 19th century again. White Angel fresco, a masterpiece of medieval Serbian art is found in the monastery. The monastery church was built in the style of Raska school.
Sopocani Monastery This monastery is located near the spring of Raska River. Its founder too came from the line of Nemanjici. King Uros had this monastery built in 1260. Architecturally it belongs to Raska school, and the church is dedicated to Holy Trinity. The frescos in Sopocani (13th century) are considered to be the most representative work of this period. Novi Pazar Peter Church Not far from Novi Pazar city lies the oldest medieval building in Serbia. Historical evidence say that it was built in the period before Nemanjic rule supposedly sometime during 9th century. Stefan Nemanjic received Christianity in it and also it is the place where he transferred power on his son Stefan. The church is not active anymore.
Djurdjevi Stupovi Monastery The monastery is located on a hill, 4 kilometers from Novi Pazar. It was founded by Stefan Nemanja in 1168. The monasterys church is dedicated to St George. It was in ruins for a long time, but recently it is being renovated. Although the work is only partially completed, the monastery is already active. Studenica Monastery 11 kilometers from Usce we find the most important Serbian monastery. It was build by Stefan Nemanja in the early 12th century and it was named after Studenica, river on whose bank it was built. The monastery was decorated in the early 13th century and its frescos and icons represent the peak of the Byzantine art.
Guca Village in Dragacevo region. The Dragacevo Trumpet Festival in Guca. This manifestation has surpassed the limits of a local event a long time ago and is now considered a big event even abroad. Guca, village of some 2500 people, hosts up to few hundred thousand visitors during the Festival. The event cannot be described in words. It has to be experienced. Sjenica The city on Pester Plateau. Vast pastures of Pester provide ideal conditions for cattle raising. The most recognizable products made in this area include: Sjenica cheese, smoked beef ham, sudzuk and paprikas in sour cream. Uvac River Famous Uvac meanders. Kraljevo Kraljevo is located on the left bank of Ibar River close to confluence of Ibar and Zapadna Morava. It is said that it was given its royal name by King Milan Obrenovic in 1882. Today Kraljevo is the administrative, cultural and economic center of Raska area. Zica Monastery The first Serbian Archbishopric. One of the most significant monasteries in Serbia. Stefan the First Crowned was the founder of this monastery, with the assistance of his brother Sava. Building of the monastery began in 1208 and it was completed in 1215. seven rulers from the Nemanjic family were crowned in this monastery.
Medieval Fortress Maglic This fortress was used for protection of Studenica monastery by controlling the road along Ibar Gorge. One of the copying schools was located inside the fortress in St. Georges church. National Park Kopaonik Because of rare animal species and plants, and the outstanding beauty of this mountain, over 11,000 hectares of its territory was given the status of the National Park.
Crna Reka Monastery It was founded in 14th century by St Peter Koricki. His relics are still kept in the monastery as one of its most sacred belongings. The monastery church dedicated to St Archangels, was built on a cliff using the cave which was already there. |
